Have you ever felt guilty that your indoor cat is stuck inside all the time? My cat loves to peer outside windows for hours looking for birds and other activity. You can take your cat walking outside on a harness, but that option is not practical or realistic for everyone.

That’s why a portable outdoor cat enclosure can change your cats life and give them a taste of the outdoors, safely. The EliteField Playpen is my top pick due to its easy setup, roomy interior, and easy to clean nature, plus overall build quality.

EliteField 2-Door Soft Pet Playpen
9
  • Easy to setup, collapsible for portability
  • Sturdy, roomy, with high build quality
  • Ground stakes for stability
  • Easy to clean
  • Made of canvas and mesh
  • Multiple sizes available

My overall best portable outdoor cat enclosure pick is really portable and light, roomy, and simple to setup anywhere. It combines that with excellent build quality from an America manufacturer.

There’s even a 100% money back guarantee. (Which people take advantage of, not because they were unsatisfied but because they ordered the wrong size.)

Constructed of heavy duty 600D canvas and mesh, the EliteField 2-Door Soft Pet Playpen is tough yet soft. The top and bottom can be zipped on and off, so leave the top off if your cat is not a jumper or you buy a high-enough sided one.

The floor is also water resistant, meaning liquid is easily cleaned, but will soak through eventually. The zip-off floor makes clean up super easy, as you can tidy up spilled litter or water by just removing it.

With over 8 sizes, there’s the perfect size for your cat. The dimensions on the one above are 52 x 52 x 32 (inches). Users are able to regularly fit a litter box, a cat tree, a scratching post and food bowls while still having plenty of lounging room for their cat.

No matter the size, this playpen is well ventilated, and any cat will feel secure while enjoying fresh air and sunshine.

Don’t worry if it seems like this thing could blow away with a strong wind. It comes with ground stakes to make sure your cat and enclosure is secure. For portability, it also comes with a carrying bag.

Runner Up – Best Attached to Window

Outback Jack Outdoor Cat Enclosures
8.75
  • Collapsible
  • Polyester, Nylon Mesh Construction
  • Weight 7.3 lbs
  • 74"L x 63"W x 36"H

I really love this cat tunnel with attached tent tent! I’d categorize it as the best pick for a playful cat because its design offers lots of room for “going wild” just out of reach from the actual wild.

There’s more than 30 square feet of living space in this nifty pen, including the tunnel, which is a lengthy 72 inches.

The big perk here is that your cat is getting 360-degree views. I really like the Outback Jack Outdoor Cat Enclosure Tunnel and Tent as a beach accessory for cats because it’s so easy to pack along for a day in nature.

I think it could even work great at a camping site. It comes with its own lightweight carrying bag, too.

The tunnel on this cat zone has zippered doors at both ends. The tent and tunnel connect for safety and security. However, I do want to point out that you’re really getting two products in one here because the tunnel and tent can be used separately.

Rating Breakdown:

  • Portability 9/10
  • Size 10/10
  • Build Quality 7/10
  • Price 9/10
  • Overall Rating 8.75

What We Liked:

  • Two cat pens in one
  • Snaps open easily for instant setup
  • Lightweight and portable
  • Fun for cats
  • Very roomy. Your cat can run and pounce
  • Can be weighed down from the corners

What We Didn’t Like:

  • The rope that you pull through the center of the tent to pop it open feels a little flimsy. I wish it could be more substantial.
  • The side poles could be a little sturdier in my opinion.
  • If your cat refuses to get out, you’ll need to climb to get her!

Top Portable Outdoor Cat Run

Kittywalk Outdoor Net Cat Enclosure
8
  • Collapsible
  • Steel, Mesh Construction
  • Weight 14.8 lbs
  • 10 feet L x 24"W x 4.5"H

This is a four-season cat pen with weather-resistant qualities that offers 10 feet of room for cat shenanigans (on the large).

While a very substantial design, you can rest assured that it’s easy to bring along when traveling. There’s even a storage bag included in your kit.

The construction on the Kittywalk Outdoor Net Cat Enclosure is quality. You’re getting steel wickets with rip-stop netting. The industrial-strength netting is actually woven into a steel “hoop” that’s secured to the ground with stakes.

It’s basically camping quality!

I like the self-standing design with wide netting for great ventilation, with the added benefit that you’ll be able to see your cat clearly from a small distance. The stability is really nice.

If you’re looking to go all out, this can be combined with other Kittywalk components to create a feline wonderland in your yard.

This enclosure sets up in seconds without any assembly required. If you’re a stickler for keeping your grass pristine, you’ll love that this “catio” doesn’t harm grass.

The only downside is a few people who have enjoyed this enclosure on their patios said that you have to be careful when opening it because some of the end attachments can fall off.

Rating Breakdown:

  • Portability 10/10
  • Size 7/10
  • Build Quality 9/10
  • Price 6/10
  • Overall Rating 8.0

What We Liked:

  • Very sturdy
  • Spacious
  • Looks great on a patio, porch or garden, with the green color reminiscent of garden netting
  • Can be combined with other components to make cat tunnels in different shapes
  • 2 sizes

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Price (but justified)
  • Open bottom allows for grass on paws, but possibility of critters and bug bites

Best Large Outdoor Cat Enclosure

PawHut Large Wooden Outdoor Catio Enclosure
8.25
  • Not Collapsible
  • Wood, Wire Mes Construction
  • Weight 100 lbs
  • 71"L x 38.5"W x 71"H

This one takes a bit of commitment! However, I would definitely consider this one if you do have the room in your yard because it’s a very secure choice.

The construction on this cat enclosure is impeccable. The flat roof is shielded with asphalt to provide weather protection. There’s also a large front door with a latch that makes it easy for you to get in and out.

The latched door also provides protection against intruders.

The overall dimensions on this PawHut Large Wooden Outdoor Catio Enclosure model is 71 x 38.5 x 71 (inches). It contains six large platforms for your cat to perch, jump or nap.

However, you don’t have to worry so much about biting and scratching because the wood used in this pen is coated with a pet-safe sealant.

Some users trim the roof panels on this cat pen to be able to place it flush against the house. In turn, it has the effect of creating an adorable kitty sun porch.

Rating Breakdown:

  • Size 10/10
  • Build Quality 10/10
  • Ease of Assembly 8/10
  • Price 5/10
  • Overall Rating 8.25

What We Liked:

  • A true house for your cat
  • Looks very attractive in a yard
  • Very spacious! Its height will erase any fears of your cat feeling confined. It’s also a great fit for multiple cats
  • Fully secure while providing amazing ventilation and views
  • Can be painted or customized with little touches and details to match your home

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Assembly required
  • Price and size

Ideal Cat Enclosure for Indoor Use

OUTINGPET Outdoor Playpen Pop Up Cat Enclosures
7.75
  • Collapsible
  • Nylon Mesh, Plastic Construction
  • Weight 3.6 lbs
  • 74"L x 63"W x 36"H

This one makes the list because of its sweet simplicity.

This is a great indoor-outdoor play tent for pets that is really great for balconies and porches! My favorite touch on this design is the top tarp portion that offers protection from UV radiation.

I love that cats get UV protection without giving up 360-degree views with this open-aired design that uses breathable mesh.

With more than 30 square feet of space, the OUTINGPET Outdoor Cat Tent has room for several cats with space left over for toys and food dishes. The dimensions are 74 x 63 x 36 (inches).

This tent pops up in seconds. It even comes with four tent pegs for stability. There’s also a center rod for added stability. The compact design folds in an instant to offer a very portable pick for picnics and camping!

Rating Breakdown:

  • Portability 10/10
  • Size 9/10
  • Build Quality 6/10
  • Price 6/10
  • Overall Rating 7.75

What We Liked:

  • The breathable mesh is great for letting breezes blow in on hot days
  • UV protection that allows your cat to soak in vitamin D without worries
  • Comes with stakes for added stability
  • Room for several cats
  • The larger zipper door makes it easy to crawl in to tend to your cat if necessary

What We Didn’t Like:

  • It looks like this tent does have the potential to collapse while cats are using it based on reviews that I’ve seen. However, cat owners are simply able to pop it back up without any tears or scratches

Best Outdoor Cat Enclosure for Feral Cat Caretakers

New Age Pet ecoFLEX Albany Outdoor Feral Cat House
8
  • Not Collapsible
  • ECOFLEX Construction
  • Weight 18.5 lbs
  • 21.8"L x 19.1"W x 20.2"H

I haven’t forgotten about those of you who open your hearts to cats you encounter. I wanted to include a cat pen that allows you to provide a little shelter while still maintaining distance.

Most of the other designs I’ve shared so far won’t be great for feral cats because softer mesh and canvas can be easily ripped if a cat isn’t domesticated and all tooth and claw at times.

That’s why I recommend the New Age Pet ecoFLEX Outdoor Feral Cat House.

The solid design is made with a special material called ecoFLEX that won’t splinter, fade, scratch or warp. You can make a cat house or covered “catio” using this cool structure that takes up very little room in your yard.

I really like this option for colder climates because stray cats can take shelter on snowy, frigid and wet days.

Rating Breakdown:

  • Size 7/10
  • Build Quality 10/10
  • Ease of Assembly 8/10
  • Price 7/10
  • Overall Rating 8

What We Liked:

  • Weatherproof, bug-proof and rot-proof
  • Assembles easily with no tools required
  • Two entry points to prevent a cat from becoming trapped by a predator
  • Very easy to maintain
  • Value
  • Looks attractive in a yard
  • Slightly elevated to prevent cats from getting snowed in

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Cleaning it can be difficult due to narrow entries
  • Some complaints about yellowing from sun exposure

Also Great

Zampa Portable Foldable Pet Playpen
7.25
  • Collapsible
  • Canvas, Mesh, Plastic Construction
  • Weight 8.9 lbs
  • 61"L x 61"W x 30"H (Large)

I had to make room on my list for this classic option. Coming in at 61 x 61 x 30 (inches), this portable playpen is made from durable, water-resistant materials using eight panels for added durability.

It reminds me a lot of an actual camping tent because of the way it has protected seams and reinforced corners.

The Zampa Portable Foldable Pet Playpen folds up into a carrying case that can be stored flat. The mesh top zips closed for extra security and those jumpers out there.

While lightweight, this pen is made safe for leaping cats using four metal spikes that secure it to the ground. It pops open in seconds with no assembly required.

Rating Breakdown:

  • Portability 7/10
  • Size 9/10
  • Build Quality 6/10
  • Price 7/10
  • Overall Rating 7.25

What We Liked:

  • Has some great pockets for storing cat essentials
  • Easy to clean
  • Very breathable
  • Good visibility

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Probably not great for more than one cat unless the two cats are very close
  • Not inexpensive, but fast, easy and secure

What Exactly is a Portable Outdoor Cat Enclosure?

Photo via marneejill (CC BY-SA 2.0)

Simply put, it’s a soft enclosure space that you are able to set up in a flash basically anywhere, like in a yard, park, or even the beach. It functions as fun, free area where a cat can get a taste of the outdoors safely.

You remove an enclosure from their case, unfold, and the frame basically “pops up.” And they’re not just a round space like you’d imagine. Different models provide various shapes and levels to explore.

When done with the day, they are collapsible and so fold back into a small form factor.

Call It a Catio, Tent or Playpen

You’ll see people refer to these as portable cat playpens, play tents, or catios. Terms are confusing, but they all kind of mean something similar.

The only distinction is permanent vs portable. Permanent catios AKA enclosures are likely larger, with stronger materials like steel or wood to withstand the elements outside. Portable catios AKA playpens are soft for portability.

But Never a Cage or Kennel

Some people even incorrectly call this type of product a cat cage or kennel.

A cat enclosure is not a hard kennel or cage for captivity. An enclosure is meant to be a fun, short-term hangout spot for your cat that’s enjoyed with human supervision.

You should never simply keep your cat in a catio for the day without supervision just because it is secure, that would be cruel.

The Benefits of a Portable Cat Enclosure

Photo via zombieite (CC BY 2.0)

Outdoor cat enclosures are awesome, they bring the outdoors to an indoor cat without exposure to things like cars, natural predators, bugs, or escaping from a harness.

Here’s all the fantastic rewards waiting for them outside!

Vitamin D

Vitamin D plays a big role in feline health through fostering bone growth, managing calcium absorption, supporting muscles and nerves and preventing some forms of cancer. Vitamin D is also big for heart health!

“Vitamin D is an essential vitamin for cats,” according to the National Animal Supplement Council. And one of the best ways to produce vitamin D is through sun exposure.

This may be why cats love sunbathe next to windows all day! If your cat does this, treat them to a nice cat window perch.

Physical and Mental Health

“The outdoors allows for a much better environment for your cat to get adequate exercise,” according to Aspen Grove Veterinary Care. “Additionally, time outdoors can promote mental health as it gives a cat time to explore and keep their mind active.”

The Animal Humane Society actually promotes the use of outdoor enclosures for cats as a safe way to “give your cat fresh air and the feeling of being outside while keeping them safe from cars, predators, and even poisonous plants.”

Outdoor enclosures are great for stimulating your cat’s senses in a new environment. A 30-minute block of time in the enclosure is the ultimate boredom buster for cats. We all know bored, restless cats scratch curtains, couches, and carpets!

Quality Time with Owner

I also love how easy it is to bond with your cat while I read a book or sip coffee without constantly monitoring a harness.

It lets me rest easy knowing my cat is enjoying the outdoors in a secure space. They are protected from predators and other dangers such as cars. The security of an outdoor playpen beats letting your cat out and needing to enclose your whole backyard to keep them in.

Easy to Live With

Easy-up enclosures are simply easier for most to live with, especially renters or those in apartments. Keep it somewhere tucked away and bring it along to the great outdoors. After use, fold it up again and store.

Those with land or a house can easily accommodate a solid permanent outdoor catio. I think this is lovely and I plan on doing the same when I am more settled.

Building a standing structure definitely beats the labor-intensive alternative of enclosing your backyard for your cat or the controversial choice of invisible cat fences.

Not for Every Cat

So are outdoor enclosures good for every cat? No, they are only best for cats that actually want to be outside without fear and anxiety. I know my cat likes spending time outdoors. However, that does not mean all cats will enjoy an outdoor playpen experience.

On the flipside, if feral or outdoor cats hang out on your property and you want to give them a taste of the indoors, an outdoor cat house is a very respectable thing to have onsite.

How to Choose a Portable Outdoor Catio

Photo via zombieite (CC BY 2.0)

Safety, safety and safety are the big factors to obsess over when choosing the best portable outdoor cat enclosure. This isn’t meant to just be a cute “prop” for bringing a cat outside.

The enclosure you choose is the only barrier between you cat and the dangers of suburban, city or country life!

Materials

Breathable materials are essential! You don’t want your cat to become overheated while in a cat enclosure. What’s more, you want to be able to keep an eye on your cat.

My reviews cover enclosures made from materials like tent-grade mesh and netting. I even have a wood option on the list. Materials like plastic and metal can be dangerous because they can overheat.

Size

My personal take is that bigger is better because your cat will have more room to feel like they are truly outside.

A cat enclosure should allow your cat to at least pace around. If your cat can barely turn around inside an enclosure, it’s not a good fit!

Number of Cats

First, make sure your cats actually want to be placed in an enclosure together. This requires you to be very honest about feline temperament.

I suggest going with a longer cat enclosure with a run area if you’ll be using it for more than one cat.

My review list also covers some taller options that allow cats to perch at different levels if you have a strong case of feline hierarchy at your house!

Portability

If you want something you can take along for camping, beach trips and picnics, focus on designs that are built like human-sized tents as far as being foldable and collapsible.

If you only want to use a catio at home, there are lots of permanent and semi-permanent types of cat enclosures that will fit your needs and living arrangements.

What Type of Enclosure Is Best for Your Cat?

If after reading this, you feel like an portable outdoor cat enclosure is not for you, here are a few other popular styles of enclosures (indoor and outdoor):

Indoor Cat Enclosure

Indoor cat enclosures or cat crates are useful for situations like:

  • when a new pet or cat comes into the household
  • quarantining
  • litter box training
  • domesticating a feral or outdoor cat
  • for kittens who like to explore and need a safe space to play

These enclosures can be placed in any room and are typically made of various materials from plastic to nylon to metal. Note a cat tent is enclosed on all sides, a pen is open air on top, and cage is a cage (but large.)

Outdoor Cat Enclosure AKA Catios

An outdoor cat enclosure AKA catio is a great way to give your cat the outdoors without the dangers of cars, predators, and poisonous plants.

Catios come in many different sizes and styles and can be attached to your home or placed in the yard. They are typically made of wire mesh and wood and offer plenty of room for your cat to explore.

Outdoor Cat Enclosure Attached to Window

If you live in an apartment or condo, an outdoor cat enclosure attached to your window can give your cat a direct path to the fresh air and sun they crave.

These tube-like enclosures are attached to a window and lead outside, so your cat can travel down the length of the enclosure, and feel the grass on their paws safely.

Window Boxes

Window boxes are a great way to give your cat some fresh air without too much space. These enclosures basically pop out of a window and gives your cat an extra area to lounge.

Outdoor Cat Enclosures Connected to House

You can also find or build outdoor cat enclosures that are connected to the house. In practical terms, this would be like enclosing a part of a patio or backyard and turning that into the entire enclosure.

Because of the large space, you can easily fit all your cat’s essentials like litter box, cat trees, food and water. They might even decide to spend most of their time out here if the weather’s nice!

Balcony Enclosures

Have an open balcony? With mesh or netting, you can easily turn that space into an area your cat will want to spend most of their days chirping at birds and chasing rogue bugs that land in her territory!

DIY Cat Enclosure

Some cat owners prefer to build their cat enclosures. This can be a great option if you are handy and have the time to do it.

There are many different plans and kits available online. Building your enclosure also allows you to customize it to your cat’s needs and your home’s style.

Outdoor Cat Enclosure Kits

Finally, there are outdoor cat enclosure kits that you can purchase. These kits have everything you need to build an enclosure for your cat.

Can You DIY an Outdoor Cat Enclosure?

I don’t do DIY for my cat because I actually enjoy finding products that offer all the touches I want. However, I’ve seen people build some pretty impressive catios!

If you’re willing to make a trip to the lumber store for a cat patio that’s a permanent addition to your home, check this here because it’s filled with amazing inspiration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Cats Like Outdoor Enclosures?

Like their ancestors, cats have a natural curiosity and love to climb and play while exploring new environments. They also love to have some alone time, and the outdoor playpen will give them a private space where they can retreat to. Additional benefits to the outdoor cat enclosure and why your cat will like them are:

  • Safety While Venturing Outdoors – An outdoor playpen protects your cat from poisons such as fertilizer, theft, and traffic accidents and disease. A secure outdoor playpen will reduce the risk of harm to your cat for years to come.
  • Improved General Health – An outdoor playpen gives your cat a secure area to play and exercise their muscles. It would be beneficial if you installed toys in the enclosure. This will give your cat something to play with and entertain, and they are bound to love it.
  • Mental Stimulation – Cats restricted within the house may be irritable and anxious and may disturb you at night. After installing an outdoor playpen, your indoor cat will open to a new world. The new sights, such as bird smells and things that you may otherwise find normal such as grass or trees, may stimulate your cat, and they are likely to be less anxious
  • Vitamin D From Sunlight – Your kitty will love being able to relax while basking in the sun. This will also allow them to get Vitamin D, which may improve their skin and coat.

How big should an outdoor cat enclosure be?

This can depend on your cat’s activity level. If you have an active cat, consider an enclosure with a “run area” that allows your cat to run and jump freely. Older cats may simply need enough room to pace around.

Are cats happy in a catio?

Catios provide the sun, fresh air and visual stimulation that many cats love! They offer a safe way for cats to live out their instincts for enjoying fresh air while keeping cats separated from predators, the elements and cars.

But it is difficult to say whether your cat will enjoy it because every cat is different. Some cats may love the opportunity to explore the outdoors, while others may prefer to stay indoors.

However, most cats will enjoy spending time in an outdoor enclosure if it is large enough and has enough enrichment to keep them stimulated.

How do I enclose my backyard for my cat?

There are many ways in which you can make your backyard a safer space for curious cats.

  • Overhead netting is one of the best approaches. The main drawback is that it can only be added if you have an already existing and fence on your property. It simply will prevent your cat from climbing up over existing fencing.
  • Those without existing fencing can purchase a whole new fence system specifically designed to keep cats in your yard. Not only are they tall, but they have some obstacle element that makes it difficult for cats to scale over them.
  • If you have an existing fence, you can install extra pieces to the top of them to make them impossible for cats to get over.
  • Alternatively, you can enclose a large open area in your house around the backyard. An example of this would be like a balcony, patio, or porch. In this case, there is no open top area so Fluffy cannot jump over.
  • Purchasing a large standalone catio will also ensure that your cat is safely enclosed within your backyard. The catio should provide adequate floor and vertical space for climbing, jumping, lounging, and hiding.
  • You can build a catio, provided you have an appropriate area for it to stand. Plans for building a catio are available for purchase.
  • Or instead of a permanent catio with a large footprint, consider a portable outdoor cat enclosure that “pops up” anywhere – the beach, the park, the yard, and more.

Is it cruel to keep a cat in a catio?

It is not cruel to keep a cat in a catio temporarily and supervised, as this provides them with a much-needed outlet for their natural behaviors. Cats can enjoy vitamin D from the sun, fresh air, and stimulation from the sights and smell around them in a catio.

A well-designed catio will provide cats with plenty of mental and physical stimulation to keep them happy and healthy. The catio should be spacious to support the cat’s physical health, which involves climbing, jumping, and running. Plenty of hiding places, perches, and scratching posts to keep your cat mentally stimulated is also non-negotiable.

Many believe letting their cats roam freely outdoors is the best way to keep them happy and healthy. However, this is not always the best option, the outdoors are dangerous. A catio is a safe alternative that allows your cat to enjoy the outdoors without putting them at risk.

How long should a cat stay in a catio?

A cat cannot live in a catio 24/7, that would be cruel. Caging your cat or keeping it in an enclosure outdoors is not a natural way to live. In the wild, cats roam freely, choosing when and where they want to rest or hunt.

A catio gives your cat some of that same freedom while keeping them safe from potential dangers – it’s a play area, not a cage.

Allowing your cat to enter and leave the catio freely is essential, as this will help keep them from feeling trapped. Providing your cat with a litter box, scratching posts, toys, and plenty of places to hide will help to keep them happy and healthy.

Is it cruel to keep cats inside?

While it is not cruel to keep a cat inside, you want to provide them with plenty of stimulation and enrichment.

Indoor cats live longer because they are not exposed to the dangers of the outdoors. Cars, animals, and other dangers can all threaten an outdoor cat.

However, a life spent entirely indoors can result in a cat that becomes anxious, restless, and bored. That’s where a catio comes in – a secure option for your cat to enjoy the elements without putting them at risk.

Can cats live in an outdoor enclosure?

Do not confine your cat anywhere, including in an outdoor enclosure, without providing adequate food, water, and shelter. It is considered animal cruelty if you confine your cat outdoors without meeting their basic needs. Additionally, cats who are confined outdoors are at risk for dehydration, heat stroke, and hypothermia.

If your cat’s enclosure is connected to the house, provide open access to the house so your cat can move as they please. This ensures that they can come in if they get too hot or cold and have access to food and water.

Whether you have a standalone or portable enclosure make sure to supervise your cat when they are in it. This is important because they could jump or climb out and get lost or hurt. Additionally, standalone outdoor enclosures should be made of sturdy materials like steel or wood that cannot be easily chewed through or scratched open.
