My Maine Coon, Chelle, is 14 pounds of determined cat, and needs a litter box to match. Based on her needs, the best litter box for Maine Coon cats we’ve found is the Petmate Giant Litter Box.

With a normal size litter box, sometimes she’d step in the mess after and track it out over the house. Litter scatter was on the floors often, too. I really empathized because I wanted the best for her, and the normal litter box was not it.

But a cat’s toilet issues are individual, and what’s best for my Maine Coon may not the best for yours. That’s why I’ve listed other great litter boxes in other categories. Let’s get into it.

Here are the products we review in this article:

Best Extra Large Litter Box for Maine Coon Cats

The Petmate Giant Litter Box
9.5
  • Perfect size for Maine Coons
  • 25.56in L x 18.3in W x 10.02in H
  • Hard, durable plastic
  • Affordable
  • Angled design prevents litter spray

The Petmate Giant is a huge open-lid litter box with a wide base. It is simply the best extra large litter box for Maine Coon cats, in my experience.

At 25.56″ length x 18.3″ width x 10″ height, a child can sleep in it! It’s jumbo sized and its length, width, and height measurements exceed comparable “large” boxes.

Any Maine Coon, average sized to world recorder holder, can comfortably use this litter box. Its sturdy design and durable plastic make it ideal for Maine Coon cat owners, too.

Materials and Comfort-Grip Rim

The Petmate Giant’s materials is made from 95% recycled plastic and is particularly sturdy, most notably the base.

One problem that a cat owner might experience is lifting the litter box. They can be considerably heavy filled with 20-30 pounds of litter.

All along the rim are curved edges that allow you to easily grab beneath the rim and lift it. You can carry the box with ease anywhere! (Not that you would change its location! But, for cleaning, this is quite useful).

Rave Reviews

Those who have purchased the Petmate Giant are loving it. Many Maine Coon parents who have problems with their cats urinating on the edges of the litter box and stepping in their waste are finding their problems to be solved.

The open top allows for easy access to Maine Coon cats handle themselves in a spacious environment. Yet it also keeps in mind senior and mobility-challenged cats with its addition of a lower front.

Keep the Surroundings in Mind

This box is a great choice for those who need a larger, open litter box and have the room for it. Those with smaller spaces may find it difficult to own as the litter box can’t be easily placed anywhere.

Rating Breakdown:

  • Size: 10/10
  • Performance: 10/10
  • Durability: 8/10
  • Price: 10/10
  • Overall Score: 9.5

What We Liked:

  • Great comfortable size for Maine Coon cats
  • Inexpensive
  • Open pan for easy access
  • Angled design prevents litter spray
  • Curved rim makes carrying the heavy box easy

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Large box may not fit all homes
  • Requires more litter to be bought and used to fill the box

Runner Up Large Litter Box for Maine Coon Cats

Frisco Extra Large High Sided Cat Litter Box
9
  • Very similar in size to our top choice
  • Deeper, wider, and taller than most boxes
  • High sided all the way around, except for slightly lower front entrance

Our runner up large litter box for Maine Coon cats is very similar in size to the Petmate Giant, and from another popular brand.

At 25″ length x 18″ width x 10″ height, the Frisco Extra Large High Sided Cat Litter Box is also deeper, wider, and taller than most boxes.

A litter box should contain the cat from nose to tail, and this one fits even the largest Maine Coon, much less your average 15 – 18 pound one.

Your cat will certainly have room to do their business, turn around, cover it, then move around some more to complete the job. All without stepping in it.

The waste will also end up somewhere in confines of the box, and not in the edges.

Open Top

Note both my top picks are open tops. This is because an open top is advantageous for Maine Coon cats. They need the space and don’t want to feel confined when performing their business.

An open top also makes removing the litter easier for owner. You don’t have to disassemble a top lid or reach in inside to sanitize. You simply pour the old litter out for disposal, give it a quick hosedown or wipe down, and the box is ready to be refilled.

High Sided Design

All cats scratch and kick litter, with it often being thrown over the sides of the box. To combat this, the Frisco and Petmate Giant employ slightly different design choices.

The Frisco model is high sided all the way around. This is in contrast to the Petmate Giant, which slopes downward from the rear to the front.

Lowered Front

A problem with high-sided litter boxes is that older cats or those with hip and flexibility issues cannot easily enter. This box address that by having a slightly lower front entrance.

Rating Breakdown:

  • Size: 9/10
  • Performance: 10/10
  • Durability: 8/10
  • Price: 9/10
  • Overall Score: 9.0

What We Liked:

  • Great comfortable size for Maine Coon cats
  • Inexpensive
  • Easy access
  • High sided all around

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Large box may not fit all homes
  • Requires more litter to be bought and used to fill the box

Best Top Entry Litter Box for Maine Coons

Modkat XL Litter Box
9
  • Fantastic design with durable materials and tall sides
  • Spacious litter box with large top or front entrances
  • Easy to scoop and clean up, top grate deters tracking

The Modkat XL Litter Box is a spacious litter box with a dual top or front-entry design. This box is one of the best options for top entry for Maine Coons thanks to its seamless base.

It is 21” in length x 16.3” in width x 17” in height, which allows plenty of space for even the largest Maine Coon cat to maneuver. Your cat will not feel too enclosed in this litter box with its large entry points.

Clean-up is also a breeze with this litter box. A large cat like a Maine Coon will mean scooping more waste. A Maine Coon litter box should prioritize clean solutions, such as this one’s reusable liner. The base is seamless, with tall sides, which means less chance for leaks and better odor control.

Large cat breeds, like the Maine Coon, will benefit from a large litter box with durable materials, tall sides, and large entry points.

Unique Configurable Design

For multi-cat households or if your cats have different preferences, you can change the entry for this litter box. The side entry features a high step with a walk-off platform to prevent litter spread. However, close the side entry and open the top entry to create the perfect top entry litter box for Maine Coons.

Scoop Easily and Often

A swivel lid design lets you swing the Modkat XL Litter Box open to scoop any time at all. Clean-up is easier than ever, even if your Maine Coon tracks litter easily with their big paws.

Everything You Need

There is no need to buy anything extra with this litter box for Maine Coons. All the things you need to get started are included – the seamless base, the swivel lid, the hanging scoop, and the reusable liner. You can focus on spending time with your Maine Coon. Plus, you do not need to worry about finding a large enough litter pan or liner to fit inside it.

Rating Breakdown:

  • Size: 10/10
  • Performance: 10/10
  • Durability: 10/10
  • Price: 6/10
  • Overall Score: 9/10

What We Liked:

  • Ideal for larger cats
  • Modify to suit your cat
  • Swivel lid prevents mess
  • Lid doubles as a litter mat
  • Everything included

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Must use Modkat’s reusable liner
  • Not ideal for senior cats

Top Covered Litter Box for Maine Coons

Catit Jumbo Hooded Cat Litter Pan
8.25
  • Stops litter spray and odors and covers up view of the open litter pan
  • Large enough for any big cat
  • Easy to scoop and clean without lifting the hood and setting on the ground

The Catit Jumbo Hooded Cat Litter Pan is my pick for the best covered litter box for Maine Coons. It stops litter spray and odors completely, plus covers up view of the open litter pan.

So if your cat demands privacy or you want an enclosed box for practical reasons, this extra large hooded litter box from Catit is the model for you.

Jumbo Sized

At 22.44 x 16.93 x 18.11 inches, this litter box is large enough for any big cat. Tons of reviewers mention that their big, fat, chunky, wide, 15 pound, or 20 pound cats use this box with no problems.

Another common thing they said was that this box is even big enough for multiple cats. Rest assured, your Maine Coon can use it!

Reduces Odors

A big problem with covered boxes is just that – it’s covered. The lid and air inside is exposed to crazy dirty dust and odors. Good thing this Catit model has a replaceable carbon filter to help with the odor situation.

Cats (and humans) are really clean creatures and appreciate not getting hit with a wall of noxious fumes when opening the litter box door. The filter also prevents this stuff from escaping into your room-at large.

Easy Clean Up

Covered boxes will always be more work to clean vs an open litter pan, due to the lid or hood mechanism.

But the Catit Jumbo Hooded Cat Litter Pan devises a clever solution for easy clean up. The front entry door actually flips up and back and sets, to let you fully access the litter. Forget lifting and putting the hood down on the floor.

Rating Breakdown:

  • Size: 8/10
  • Performance: 9/10
  • Durability: 8/10
  • Price: 8/10
  • Overall Score: 8.25

What We Liked:

  • Jumbo size
  • Traps odors and prevents litter spray
  • Contains a carbon filter to reduce odor inside
  • Offers privacy
  • Sliding entry door

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Needing to clean the hood
  • Some cats may not understand how to entry and exit
  • Not all cats like enclosed systems

Premium Litter Box for Maine Coons

PetFusion Better Box Large Litter Box
8.75
  • More high-end option with high quality ABS plastic
  • Non-stick coating on surface ensures your litter is always easy to sift
  • Curved and slightly smaller vs others to fit into compact areas easier

Those who prefer a more high-end litter box for Maine Coons will love this box. It offers the same wide top that the Petmate Giant does. However, it’s also coated in a non-sticking surface that ensures your litter is always easy to sift.

When compared to the Petmate Giant litter box, the PetFusion litter box is:

  • Slightly smaller
  • More expensive
  • Offers non-sticking advantages
  • Curved to fit into compact areas easier

All of these alternatives have their benefits and negatives when compared to the Petmate Giant. Depending on the preferences of your Maine Coon, one may work better than the other.

Rating Breakdown:

  • Performance: 10/10
  • Durability: 10/10
  • Price: 7/10
  • Overall Score: 8.75

  • Looks good for a litter box

What We Didn’t Like:

Popular Automatic Litter Box for Maine Coons

PetSafe ScoopFree Automatic Self-Cleaning Cat Litter Box
7.5
  • One of the most practical and least fussy automatic litter boxes
  • Dust free and low tracking crystal litter dries out waste and eliminates odors
  • Super easy to change litter tray vs loose litter in a traditional box

It’s a whole new world for cat owners who want the best automatic litter box experience. You can spend $80 all the way to $500 plus for the newest Litter Robot technologies.

But my recommendation is a classic: the PetSafe ScoopFree Automatic Self-Cleaning Cat Litter Box. It’s the most practical and least fussy at a reasonable price, making it one of the best automatic litter boxes for Maine Coon cats.

The automation is simple: a motion sensor detects when Fluffy is done and gone. It tells a mechanism to comb through the litter and separates solids into a different compartment for easy disposal.

Large Enough for Maine Coons

A common complaint of automatic litter boxes involves the actual area a cat can use being too small. With the PetSafe system, reviewers say that there’s quite a bit of surface area. Some even say the unit is larger than expected!

Be sure to check the measurements of your space and ensure it’ll fit.

Dust Free Crystal Litter

You can’t talk about the PetSafe Automated Litter Box system without mentioning its crystal litter. Crystal litter is basically made from silica gel – you might know it from the little packs in your favorite snack foods.

Instead of clumping and covering up waste, the silica basically dehydrates waste, rendering it dry and to an odorless state.

In comparison to common clay clumping litter, crystal litter is basically dust-free and low tracking. Meaning no gross and dangerous dust clouds when scooping plus you won’t find it all over your house! Win-win!

Easy Litter to Change

Changing the litter cam be a chore for big litter boxes. But this system is super easy.

When it’s time to change after 20-30 days, you lift up the litter try, cover it with an included lid and toss it in the trash. Then you simply replace with a new tray.

Rating Breakdown:

  • Size: 7/10
  • Performance: 8/10
  • Durability: 8/10
  • Price: 7/10
  • Overall Score: 7.5

What We Liked:

  • Large enough for Maine Coons
  • Simple and effective
  • Affordable compared to other automatic litter boxes
  • No fuss crystal litter

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Recurring cost of crystal litter refills
  • Not all Maine Coons will accept technology

Things to Consider in a Litter Box for Your Maine Coon Cat

Photo via Catza.net

When buying a new litter box for Maine Coons, then there are a few things to consider first.

Size

Obviously, one of the most important aspects is the size. A larger litter box will allow your cat to step into it with ease and actually fit inside of it. As a Maine Coon owner, you know how difficult it can be for your jumbo cat to fit into regular-sized cat products (like cat trees).

A larger litter box will reduce the mess that you need to clean, because your cat will be able to maneuver and properly cover their work with more litter. It can also stop litter from tracking from the box because there’s more room for litter fall off paws.

Be Tailored to Your Maine Coon

Your cat has toilet habits, and the litter box should address that. It should alleviate problems or cater to preferences they have, when they use it.

For example:

  • Maine Coons who like privacy will feel anxious with an open top box
  • Senior cats, or those with with flexibility issues will struggle with a high sided litter box
  • “Digger cats” that really get into litter, will benefit from a high sided or covered box and keep litter in

Space and Owner Preference

Measure your room or area before purchasing a larger litter box to confirm there is real estate for it. Imagine a small room with a giant litter box dominating! Not pleasant, unless the room is a dedicated litter box room.

Alternatively, consider cat litter furniture, units that look like tasteful, regular furniture that stores a litter box inside.

Does Your Maine Coon Have Litter Box Problems?

“In general, cats have very peculiar toilet habits,” says Maine Coon Hawaii’s veterinary advisor Dr. Abdul Basit Javed (DVM, RVMP), “cats like to bury their waste in order to mask their scent from other animals and prefer a clean spot to do their business, which a litter box provides. A litter box not only keeps your cat healthy but also helps maintain hygiene and cleanliness around the house.”

So in this context, your Maine Coon having litter box problems is telling you something. Cats are pretty smart creatures, but they can’t exactly speak up. The underlying problem can be physical, psychological, or even environmental.

For physical issues, take them to the veterinarian for a check up, as it could be a common problem like a urinary tracy infection, or even something more serious like kidney stones. Litter box problems are also a sign of older age. Did you start a new food recently?

For a psychological issue, maybe your cat is feeling down or sad about something. Has anything changed recently? Like a move, or sudden appearance of a new stressor? New food or medication? Are they overly bored or stimulated?

With environmental, look at the cat’s surroundings. This includes the litter box – if you’ve been slacking on litter box maintenance, that could be it. Maybe it’s the location of the litter box, or too few litter boxes. Maybe it’s the type of litter box.

What is the Best Litter Box for Large Cats?

Everyone’s definition of a large cat varies, but my line is 14-15 pounds. Any cat above that weight is considered large to me. Most cat accessories are not made for large cats, much less litter boxes.

So the best litter box for large cats has to meet certain criteria. These include size, durability, high walls, and more.

What About the Best Litter Box for Ragdoll Cats?

Great question! The Ragdoll, as another super fluffy, large sized cat, would benefit from any of the above big litter boxes. Any of the Petmate Giant litter boxes are a great choice.

And remember the best litter box for Ragdoll cats depends on the individual cat. They might like the open pan box, a covered box, or even an automatic litter system.

A Few Words on Maine Coon Litter Box Training

If you got a Maine Coon kitten from a proper cattery, they should already be litter trained. Good breeders do not let kittens separate from their mother and litter until 15 weeks or more.

In this time, the breeder ensures the kitten gets proper stimulation, litter training, exposure to varied environments, and is on the right path to socialization.

When the kitten comes home to you, start them off with non-clumping litter, like wood or pine, until they are 3-4 months old.

This is because if the kitten accidentally ingests clumping clay litter, it can cause intestinal blockages to their young systems. I used the the Tidy Cats Breeze Litter Box System, see my full list of the best litter boxes for kittens.

  1. Welcome to the wonderful world of Maine Coon Cats! As a very long term (30+ years) person belonging to these fabulous creatures, I suggest purchasing the black plastic tub that bricklayers use to mix mortar for a litter box. These are the perfect size, are inexpensive and long wearing, and can be purchased at your local hardware store. In Virginia, I purchase them at Lowe’s or Ace Hardware.
