What to Look for in a Cat Proof Mattress

First, I have to be honest about something. No mattress can be 100% protected against cats. Like I’ve said this in my post on cat proof curtains, the product is never a complete solution.

So while the models in my reviews can be considered puncture-resistant mattresses, there’s really no such thing as a cat-proof mattress (out of the box).

The goal is to reduce the likelihood of your cat being able to bring down an air mattress. See below for a section on how you can make your new mattress extra safe from claws.

Materials and Construction

Most of the mattresses that offer really great puncture resistance are made from materials like polyvinyl chloride (PVC), thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) vinyl and various plastics.

Most good air mattresses use something called a “flocked top” construction. This means that the mattress is made with a soft, velvet-like top that prevents sheets and blankets from sliding away.

Many high-quality air mattresses also have thick toppers like the ones you see on real mattresses. These are really great for spine and neck support. They also prevent the body from sinking into the mattress.

Let’s run through the other considerations to have in your mind as you shop for the ideal cat proof air bed!

Comfort

Comfort with a mattress can be so personal. One of the things I recommend looking for is a coil system.

Yes, a really good air mattress will actually have coil supports that run under your body. You can then decide how you feel about things like supportive built-in toppers.

Height

Most mattresses sit between 16 inches and 22 inches off the ground. I personally like being as high off the ground as possible.

However, your preference might be different if getting on and off the mattress easily is a priority. People who are buying a puncture proof air mattress specifically for times when parents visit might like a lower mattress profile.

Pump

I personally won’t consider a mattress without a built-in pump because searching my closets for my camping pump when company is spending the night just isn’t on my list of things I want to do.

I also like that a built-in pump makes it easy for my guests to customize their firmness levels on their own.

Size and Weight Capacity

Air mattresses come in many sizes. I’ve found that a queen air mattress is the best choice because it comfortably offers room for two without taking up that much space in your closet.

However, I’m including a twin in my review that you can consider if you’re squeezed for space.

Portability and Storage

Modern air mattresses all come with their own bags. That means it’s just a matter of deflating, folding and putting away.

I really love the concept of tucking a mattress into a bag because it’s protected from dust and mold. It’s also ready for you if you want to take it camping.

Warranty

One positive thing I’ve noticed is that most brands offer at least a one-year warranty on air mattresses. With the mattresses on my list ranging from roughly $60 to $130, I can see why a warranty is important.

Make sure you’re confirming that a mattress has a warranty before you drop $100 on something that can potentially pop!

How to Cat Proof Your Air Mattress

Photo via Mara 1 (CC BY 2.0)

I know that some of you are here because you want to know how to keep your air mattress safe if you have a cat. Claws and air mattresses don’t exactly create a match made in heaven!

While I can’t promise that your mattress will be spared by your cat, I can offer some simple tips for keeping it better protected. Here’s my quick “mattress protection program” from one owner of a spirited cat to another.

Extra Layers

Consider insulating your mattress with a mattress pad, mattress cover, or thick comforters. Maybe even wrap it up in plastic if aesthetics does not matter.

Anything that puts a layer between the mattress and your cat’s paw could preserve the life of the mattress. My only advice is to be careful with something like a crinkly tarp or yarn-like blanket that could entice your cat to unleash the destruction.

Trim Your Cat’s Nails

Keeping your cat’s nails nicely groomed is a great way to reduce the sharpness. Trimming nails is something that should be done regularly anyway, either by you or groomers.

Discourage Your Cat From Going Near the Bed

While we don’t want to do anything to scare or upset our cats, using barriers can help to keep your air mattress safe. The best bet is honestly just to close the door to the room where the mattress is being used.

If the air mattress is being used in a main living area, consider giving your cat an alternative to keep busy. This could be a great time to invest in your first or fourth cat tree for your home!

Put the Mattress Away

Don’t leave the temptation in plain sight for any longer than it needs to be. Put the air mattress away as soon as you’re done using it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I protect an air mattress from my cat?

The first step is purchasing a quality mattress designed to stop punctures. You can also consider covering an air mattress in extra layers consisting of things like mattress pads, comforters and tarps.

Trimming your cat’s nails can also reduce the damage. Lastly, consider keeping your cat out of the room when you are using an air mattress for guests.

Can a cat’s claws puncture an air mattress?

Yes! It’s very possible for a cat’s claw to puncture an air mattress. Purchasing a puncture-proof mattress is the best strategy for avoiding accidents.

However, no mattress can be guaranteed to survive direct claw punctures. Do your best to keep your cat out of the room if you are hosting overnight guests using air mattresses.
