It’s generally agreed upon that a cat can hold their urine for up to 24 hours. Some might even stretch it to 48 hours. The timeline is about the same for passing a stool.
Of course, you don’t want your cat holding it in for 24 hours. This can lead to discomfort, distress, and a urinary tract infection. It’s not fair to ask your cat to make this sacrifice during travel. Like humans, cats deserve a comfortable and safe travel experience.
How do you travel with a cat litter box?
Always Use Same Brand of Litter – You do not want to introduce too much change during stressful travel. To keep your cat feeling good, bring as many familiar things as possible for them. The best practice is to use the same brand of litter you do at home. You can store spare litter in a baggie until you need to use it.
No Breakfast – The best thing you can do before traveling with your cat is to avoid feeding them too soon before heading out. By not giving them breakfast, you minimize the chance that they will need to use the litter box. You can bring along food and water for especially long trips.
Hard Carriers Make for Easy Clean Up – A hard carrier will be easier to clean up in the event of an accident. You know your cat best. If you feel like they will have trouble using a litter box during travel or get nervous, pick a hard carrier. Hard sides can be wiped or hosed down, and will not hold odors.
