Our overall best cat tree for small spaces is this oh-so-perfect model from Prestige Cat Trees with a footprint of just 20 L x 20 W x 32 H inches.

This brand makes many of my top cat tree lists because of that amazing build quality, and this compact option does not disappoint.

How about real, heavy wood, human grade carpet, and sturdy, stable base – all made in the USA? Just because you have a small space doesn’t mean you should sacrifice safety or quality.

I really love how plush and soft the carpeting on this Prestige Cat Tree. So despite being in a small space, you can really spoil Fluffy with real, thick carpet as he sleeps, chills, or is up to no good,

And the sisal grass wrapped on the pillar for essential scratching needs is unoiled. This means it’ll last longer. It has to last because the sisal is machine wrapped super tight and ain’t going no where.

We know that sometimes sisal rope falls off a post due to heavy scratching, which renders the area useless. Then you’ve got to encourage her to learn to scratch another area, and hopefully it’s not your furniture or curtains in the time being!

The solid, wide base accommodates any sized cat or cats – even larger breeds. Reviewers always mentioned the overall quality, and how stable the whole tree is.

You get two levels for your cat to be on. Cats really appreciate covered areas where they feel protected, and the top bowl has a thick lip all around to curl up in while still having a view.

The fact that this cat tree matches in any apartment, while being very high quality and safe is what makes it the overall best cat tree for small spaces.

  • Unoiled sisal scratching post

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Not cheap

Runner Up (Best Slim Cat Tree!)

PetFusion Ultimate Cat Climbing Tower & Activity Tree
8.5
  • Engineered Wood, Sisal Construction
  • Space-friendly design for smaller apartments
  • 24"L x 20.8"W x 76.8"H

The long, sturdy post on this cat tree makes perfect for a nimble cat who loves to climb. Apartment denizens also win because this modern and sleek design takes up little space.

In addition to a single post that is used for climbing and scratching, this slim cat tree features two platforms. With the simplicity of this design comes the sacrifice of not having plushness.

But if your cat prefers to be up high and watch over their kingdom, they won’t mind the admittedly minimal cushions on each perch instead. This model is absolutely one of the best cat trees for climbers.

If you’re worried about this tree being too lightweight, simply use the drywall anchors included to attach it to a wall. Dimensions are 24 inches(L) x 20.8 inches(W) x 76. 8 inches(H) (!!)

The posts are constructed of medium density fiberboard (stronger than plywood) rather than lower-quality cardboard, with thick sisal wrapped around them. Replacement posts are available.

Rating Breakdown:

  • Stability 10/10
  • Build Quality 10/10
  • Ease of Assembly 7/10
  • Price 7/10
  • Overall 8.5/10

What We Liked:

  • Space-friendly design for smaller apartments
  • Easy to wipe clean
  • Perfect for cats who love heights
  • Wall-mountable

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Older or less agile cats may have a tough time making it to the top
  • Will not appeal to all cats

Best Modern Cat Tree for Small Apartments

Vesper Cat Furniture Cat Tree
8
  • MDF, Memory Foam, Seagrass Construction
  • Modern and cool look
  • 22.1"L x 22.1"W x 47.9"H

First, go ahead and fall in love with the high-concept, mod look of this cat tree. It’s big part of why this model is one of the best cat trees for small apartments. Perfect for those who desire contemporary sculpture rather than traditional cat tree.

This design pampers cats with memory-foam bed cushions. My favorite feature is the cube because it creates such a sturdy spot for relaxing and playing.

The base on this cat tower is 22.1 inches x 22.1 inches, so its footprint is pretty small! Its height is 47.9 inches.

The cube shape of the unit’s condo is a hit if you have a cat that always loves to squeeze into empty boxes or drawers. I will say that the entry to the cube can be a little tight if you have a cat on the larger side.

However, the rest of the tree offers tons of open space where cats can stretch out a bit more.

But who has time to stretch when every single post wrapped in seagrass and meant for scratching? Your cat can *ahem* scratch that scratching itch from multiple angles and heights!

Rating Breakdown:

  • Stability 9/10
  • Build Quality 9/10
  • Ease of Assembly 9/10
  • Price 5/10
  • Overall 8/10

What We Liked:

  • Modern and cool look
  • Features New Zealand pine for added sturdiness
  • Easy to clean fur due to lack of carpet, cushions are washable
  • Pretty easy to put together

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Seagrass on scratching posts may get loose with usage

Best Budget Cat Tree for Small Apartments

AmazonBasics Cat Tree With Scratching Posts
8.25
  • Engineered Wood, Carpet, Jute Construction
  • Easy to assemble
  • (M) 15.7"L x 15.7"W x 31.5"H

This is a refreshingly basic and sturdy cat tree with jute-wrapped scratching posts, a small footprint, and is a great value, making it the best budget cat tree.

At this price point, we do miss out on a covered condo. However, cats that prefer being out in the open are sure to love the perch atop this cat tree.

The dimensions on the large size are 17.7 inches(L) x 17.7 inches(W) x 45.9 inches(H), and if that is too big for space, there is a medium size for your needs too.

The body of the unit is made from compressed wood with carpeted surfaces, and paper tubing for posts. Each post is wrapped in jute, which is less durable than sisal, but still very satisfying to scratch.

In general, this small cat tree with scratching posts offers three levels to jump on, scratch on and rest on.

Utilize the top perch by pushing this cat tree up against a window for great views! In my opinion, you’ll have luck with one large cat or two smaller cats with this cat tree.

Rating Breakdown:

  • Stability 7/10
  • Build Quality 7/10
  • Ease of Assembly 9/10
  • Price 10/10
  • Overall 8.25/10

What We Liked:

  • Good value and functional
  • Easy to assemble
  • Petite size works nicely in corners or in front of windows

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Lightweight and may wobble

Best Space Saving Cat Tree for Large Cats

FEANDREA Cat Tree for Large Cats
8.5
  • Particle Board, Fabric, Sisal Construction
  • Easy to put together
  • 23.6"L x 15.7"W x 33.1"H

This ultra-plush, ultra-spacious cat tree offers luxury for your cats. It’s the best pick if you have a larger cat or two smaller ones that do not need to be up too high.

This unit can also stand up to wear and tear from multiple cats thanks to its thickened scratching posts made from natural sisal rope.

The highlight of this unit is a widened top perch that allows your cat to feel like king or queen of the castle.

If you’re worried about wobbliness, you’ll appreciate the anti-tipper rods and reinforced base plate included in this design. Combine with the medium height and sturdy base, this really was designed for larger cats.

The dimensions on this cat tree are 23.6 inches(L) x 15. 7 inches(W) x 33.1 inches(H).

Rating Breakdown:

  • Stability 10/10
  • Build Quality 8/10
  • Ease of Assembly 9/10
  • Price 7/10
  • Overall 8.5/10

What We Liked:

  • Great price for the size
  • Seriously sturdy
  • Easy to put together
  • Dual-condos
  • Very soft materials

What We Didn’t Like:

  • No step to the top platform, not for older or mobility-impaired cats

Super Space Saving Cat Tree for Small Apartments

S-Lifeeling Cat Climbing Tree
6.25
  • Cardboard Tube, Faux Carpet Construction
  • Super space efficient
  • 10.6"L x 17"W inch x 113"H

This is a top choice for a cat with an insatiable appetite for heights. With such a narrow base, I’d actually consider this to be more of a cat ladder than a cat tree.

Choosing this is a potential win-win situation because it takes up so little space in an apartment! The base is just 17 inches. However, it extends a full 113 inches upwards!

While the height of this narrow cat tree may seem precarious, it’s carefully designed with a heavy base and tension spring mechanism that wedges the top into the ceiling. No drilling is required!

Eco-friendly board material provides confidence that your cats are spending time in a healthy environment.

The tree is available in black, beige and purple. The rougher carpeting used in this design is great to scratch for cats. For extra durability, there’s an option to add sisal rope and wrap it DIY style.

Rating Breakdown:

  • Stability 6/10
  • Build Quality 4/10
  • Ease of Assembly 10/10
  • Price 5/10
  • Overall 6.25/10

What We Liked:

  • Super space efficient
  • Exceptional height
  • High-quality, eco-friendly materials
  • Decent price
  • Soft
  • Easy to assemble

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Minimal design, no covered hideaways
  • Minimal space for stretching out to nap
  • Not for larger cats

What Cats Need From Cat Trees

Cat trees are not “luxuries,” and no matter how small your space, the one you select has to meet your cat’s biological and evolutionary needs.

This piece of furniture is ultimately a place where your cats perform the things their wild ancestor did including:

  • nap
  • retire for solitude
  • define their territory
  • stretch and work out their scratching instincts

It’s also a location where they can:

  • survey their land from a high position
  • look out windows
  • judge you and your weird habits (oops)

Best Cat Tree for Small Apartments Shopping Criteria

The best cat tree for small spaces may be confusing to find, with all of the styles and configurations out there. Here the key features to look at when finding a cozy tower for your cat.

Sturdiness: The Base Matters

Really pay attention to the wideness of the base of any cat tree you’re considering. You should also focus on designs that won’t topple under the weight of fast-moving, jumping-prone fluffers.

Do some sturdiness checks to make sure a cat tree (especially one for large cats) can withstand normal usage. If not, you need to put it in a corner or secure it to a wall. Some models come with a strap for this.

Ultimately, a wider base is safer because there’s a good chance your cat is never going to attempt using a tree again if it topples when they’re on it. You know how cats are with vendettas!

If you’re used to picking lightweight, smaller stuff for the sake of space efficiency, know that generic lightweight cat tree may not provide the sturdiness your cat needs.

A heavier cat tree made from high-quality materials like wood is really worth it if you want your cat to actually feel safe!

Loungers and Condos

As you look for for the best cat tree for your small space, favor cat trees with loungers and enclosed kitty condos.

Loungers can be U-shaped or be integrated into a perch to resemble a crow’s nest. Whatever the shape, it’s a place for cat to snooze and get some alone time.

Kitty condos are enclosed spaces, private and perfect for hiding away from the world. And in multi-cat households, condos are drama-free spots where each kitty has their own territory.

Both of these are crucial, because cats are wired to want to seek private safe spaces to sleep.

When you factor in that cats sleep between 16 and 20 hours every day, you can see why providing covered areas in their personal space is so important.

And if your cat likes to lounge by a window instead, check out the best cat window perches!

Scratching Posts

The best cat trees for small apartments have scratching posts. These will improve you and your cat’s life immeasurably. Indoor cats need to fulfill their evolutionary drives to climb, scratch, and hunt in order to live a happy life.

If you don’t provide a safe outlet for this behavior, say goodbye to your chairs, couches, carpets, curtains, and other household items. (Even your hands or feet!)

Scratching posts on a tree are made with tough sisal and jute, materials that have a satisfying texture to scratch.

Of course, your cat attacking your personal possessions isn’t just a nuisance. It can also be dangerous for your cat because things can fall or injure your kitty, especially in a smaller space.

My Small Cat Tree Recommendations

Any of my picks above can be considered a great small cat tree for your space, but for a modern pick, I like the PetPals Cat Tree with Scratching Posts and Toy Ball.

Fans of traditional cat trees may enjoy the Go Pet Club Cat Tree Perch.

A small cat tree makes a good addition to bedrooms or any secondary location where your cat hangs out. It provides some some new stimulus to existing locations. Your cat is always grateful for more real estate!

Also look at portability, it’s a good thing to be able to move a cat tree to your cat. Cats scratch no matter where they are. Move a cat tree to them and encourage them to scratch those posts instead.

Looking for the Best Cat Products for Small Apartments?

Besides cat trees, there are others cat products that excel in small apartments.

Litter Boxes

Litter boxes are a prime example. If you are tired of an open pan of litter in your small space, consider a top entry litter box like the IRIS Top Entry Litter Box.

You can even hide the litter box in its own cabinetry so it looks like normal furniture with the Merry Pets Cat Washroom Night Stand.

Another popular hidden litter box, the Good Pet Stuff Hidden Litter Box, uses a plant vase, complete with fake plants on top.

Both are good choices, and depends on your and your cats individual needs. See my full post on the best litter boxes for small spaces.

Scratching Post

I really like the SmartCat Bootsie’s Combination Scratcher because it’s versatile, and even more so in a smaller area. It’s a light, portable, but strong scratching post you prop up against a wall or leave on the ground.

With this, you basically turn anything into a scratching post, just match it to the angle your cat scratches. Use this to prevent damage to your stuff.

Thinking About a Modern Cat Tree?

My modern cat tree pick for small apartments and spaces is the Vesper Cat Furniture Cat Tree. It’s compact, sleek, and has a contemporary design that fits in with any decor.

But it’s not just all show, that cat show is a performer too. It’s stable and great build quality, with multiple platforms, scratching posts and places to catnap!

Want a Floor to Ceiling Cat Tree?

We covered two of the best floor to ceiling cat trees above, the PetFusion Ultimate Cat Climbing Tower & Activity Tree and S-Lifeeling Cat Climbing Tree. They are both space-saving with a tiny square footage footprint.

But those looking for a more substantial floor to ceiling cat tree can do no wrong with the Furhaven Pet Tiger Tough Cat Tree (Skyscraper Playground model).

This pick is a genuinely great full sized cat tree complete with the accoutrements any cat needs: platforms, condos, scratching posts. And its soaring: floor to ceiling with a tension rod for security.
