Looks alone won’t keep your cats safe and comfortable! Let’s look at the key features you need in a two cat carrier to make a successful trip.
Size
Size is the big thing. Pay attention to the dimensions first. If your cats are on the smaller side, you may be able to get away with a cat carrier for large cat without technically getting a double cat carrier.
However, it’s very important that both cats can fully extend their bodies while sitting in the carrier. They should also be able to turn around completely when the carrier is zipped up!
Partition to Separate Cats
Do your cats get along? If there’s animosity in cat city, make sure you’re getting a cat carrier with a partition that will separate your cats. Some carriers actually unhook at the sides to separate into two carriers.
Safety
Cats can escape from cat carriers. That’s why you need safety features that keep the carrier secure against both external and internal disturbances! These are the features to look for:
- Locking Zippers: Both paws and human hands can fiddle with zippers if they aren’t locked!
- Safety Leash: This can keep your cat securely in a cat carrier in a moving vehicle.
- Attachment for Seat Belt: This is essential for keeping the carrier secured to the seat if you stop fast. You wear a seat belt, your cat needs one too.
- Locking Metal Grate Door: If your cat scratches the entry, a metal mesh locking grates is the safest option.
Materials and Construction
There’s actually a lot of freedom in this category based on factors like how much space you have, your preferred carrying method, and your cat’s comfort preferences.
Many soft-shelled carriers made of breathable materials like polyester and Oxford fabric actually have steel frames for durability.
Ideally, you’re picking a cat carrier with a collapsible construction because this will make your life easier in terms of storage.
However, you can consider a hard-shelled kennel-style carrier that doesn’t fold if your cats need something even sturdier. I’ll cover this more a little further down.
Ventilation
This is what I consider one of the most important features! A good cat carrier should have plenty of mesh windows.
Look for a carrier with mesh windows on all sides if you’ll be transporting two cats because one cat’s body can easily block a ventilation window.
I personally like cat carriers with zippered “manholes” on the top that allow me to reach inside to pet my Chelle.
Comfort
Always check the inside of a cat carrier to see if it’s a place your cat would actually like to “live in.” I personally recommend removable, washable soft pads. Does it come with a litter box?
I’ve also seen lots of carriers with hammocks that are great if you’ll be using your cat carrier as a cat hotel once you arrive at your destination with your cats.
Portability
Don’t forget that you’ll be the one actually carrying your cat carrier. Pay special attention to the straps. Do they look like they will assault your shoulders? Shoulder padding is highly recommended.
If a carrier has hand grips, make sure that they are lined with some kind of cushioning because gripping any fabric for a long period of time can get painful pretty quickly when you don’t have supports.
Hard or Soft Carrier?
This is really the big question. I’ve personally found that soft carriers offer all I need for my spirited 15-lb Maine Coon cat.
However, I don’t necessarily discourage hard carriers for certain situations. I want to run through the different aspects of why both options have value:
Extra Security
Passive cats should do fine with soft carriers. However, cat claws can destroy mesh windows and zippers if enough time is given for cats to “work on them.” If your cats are known to claw and tear, consider a hard carrier.
Hard Shell
The hope is that your cat will get to your destination with you without any hiccups along the way.
However, the truth is that a hard shell provides extra protection against impact during travel. A hard shell can even protect your cat against unexpected dangers like knocking into luggage.
Easy to Clean
Any properly made soft carrier is going to be made of a material that’s easy to wipe clean.
However, a hard carrier tends to be the more sanitary choice for longer hauls simply because you don’t have to worry about any wetness being absorbed form accidents.
It can also be easier to give a cat food and water in a hard carrier because you’re not as concerned with spillage.

Picking the right cat carrier is only half the battle! You also need to know how to create a pleasant, inviting experience for your cats.
How to Get Cats in Carriers
The time to try to get your cat into a carrier for the first time is not during the minutes leading up to your departure from home.
Introduce the carrier weeks before a trip. Begin by inviting your cat to try it out. If there’s reluctance, don’t force anything.
Try leaving the carrier out in the living room with some toys and treats inside. It just might become your cat’s new favorite spot. It’s all about creating those positive associations when introducing a new cat carrier.
Air Travel
If you’re shopping for a new cat carrier because you’re bringing your cats on a plane ride, start by researching the requirements for the airline you’re using.
You will bring the carrier on the plane with you just like you’d bring any form of carry-on luggage. I recommend getting a travel litter box to use on the plane.
Don’t Leave Food in the Carrier
I really recommend taking your cat out of the carrier for eating if it’s possible. Placing food in a cat carrier can make the carrier messy.
This can stress out your cat because cats notoriously hate being stuck in tight spaces with messes. You may also attract bacteria, odors, or bugs.
Placement
“Pets should never be in the front seat always the back,” according to the veterinarians at Baxter Animal Hospital.
Harnesses Only
Never attach a cat to the carrier using a collar! This can cause your cat to end up with a broken neck. Only a suitable harness should be used if you choose to secure your cat in place.
